We thank Mr R and Mr M Gladwin for allowing us to use the large sugar beet field and adjoining stubble on a fine September morning for our open walked-up working test.
Our judges were Andy Slingsby and Tom Birchall and the Chief Steward was Mike Birchall. We thank them and all the helpers for making this test possible. Thanks also to our sponsors: Skinners and Gundog TV.
There was some brilliant dog work whilst retrieving in the tall sugar beet, with the odd hare appearing to test the dogs further.
The first two rounds involved a variety of marked retrieves, after which the field was cut to five dogs. We then moved onto the stubble, about 50 yards from the sugar beet with the line facing the corner of the field. There was a drive to the right on the stubble leaving dummies some 75 yards away.
All five dogs survived to alternate picking one of the drive dummies and a blind some 20 yards into the sugar beet. After all the dogs had completed both retrieves, the judges had their order.
