Our thanks to Mr B Wilkinson for allowing us to use this ground which is just right for puppies. We appreciate the sponsorship from Thomas Bell Country Stores who supplied bags of dog food for the winners.
We thank our judges (Sue Lowe and Julie Campbell), Chief Steward Keith Parker and all the helpers for making this such an enjoyable day for the competitors.
All dogs did four tests, the older the dogs, the greater the distance. The Junior Handlers did similar tests to the Veterans.
Test 1 for special puppies was a walk to heel with the judge. A dummy was thrown in front just in front of the wood, but the dog and handler had to turn and walk back to the start. The dog then retrieved the dummy. Another one was thrown and the handler picked it. The puppies had a short walk up, then a dummy was thrown just in front of the wood. The handler left the dog, returned to the start and then gave the dog the ‘back’ command to retrieve the dummy. As the pup returned another dummy was thrown in the same place for the second retrieve. The veterans had a mark with shot to the right but had to first pick a blind in rough grass in front of the chicken shed to the left. Juniors had to pick the mark first at the same distance.
Test 2. Special puppies had a mark thrown from inside the wood to land on the edge of the wood. Once this was picked there was a mark to the left in the field. The puppies’ first mark was inside the wood. Test 2 for Veterans and Junior Handlers were the same: a picking up exercise of 3 dummies scattered in the wood with 2 shots, two dummies were required.
Test 3 was a one dog walk up. Special puppies were given a retrieve to the left and then a retrieve to the right after another short walk up. The puppies had both dummies thrown and had to pick the last down dummy first. The veterans and Junior Handlers had a longer walk up and the dogs picked the first dummy down first.
Test 4 was a mark in the water followed by a mark along the bank for all the puppies. The other classes had a mark thrown into the water, but had to pick a blind in the field first.
Both puppies and veterans had a run off for second place.
