Open Working Test at Well on Sunday May 30th 2021
Summer has come! The sun always shines when we come to Well by kind permission of Mr and Mrs J James. We thank them for being such lovely hosts and Skinners Dog Food for sponsoring the event.
Thanks, also, to our judges, Dave Haycock and Phil Smithies, Chief Steward Sue Lowe and all the helpers.
Seventeen dogs completed the first three tests:
Test 1 was a double mark with shot to left and right along a hedge some 60 metres away in a grass field liberally sprinkled with trees.
Test 2 was a mark with shot thrown into long grass in front, but a blind had to be picked first. The dogs had a ten-metre run to the right to reach the edge of the lake. The blind was on the far bank.
Test 3 was a four dog walk up. There was a mark with shot some eighty metres in front. As soon as the mark hit the ground, a shot was fired to the left for a blind. The first dog of each pair picked the blind and the second dog retrieved the mark.
The judges then cut to ten dogs for two further tests.
Test 4 was a picking up exercise. Two blinds were tossed into the reeds at the sides of the lake. The handlers could not see the dogs once they were over the brow of the land and at the edge of the lake. Both dummies had to be picked.
Test 5 was a long mark with shot, thrown to the left from the middle of the field towards the hedge. A blind beside a tree trunk in a clump of trees at the edge of the lake to the right had to be collected first.
A run off was needed to decide second place. Two dogs had a mark in the water. They had to cover sixty metres of grassland to reach the edge of the lake where they disappeared from the view of the handler.
