We thank Mr R Ward for allowing us to hold our novice cold game test in the huge beet field. With the very hot dry weather we have been having, the sugar beet leaves have not grown to waist height this year, so walking was easier and when it rained (!) after lunch for a while it wasn’t too unpleasant. We also thank Thomas Bell Country Store for sponsoring this event.
Our excellent judges for the day were Pippa Williams and Andy Slingsby and Martin Eveleigh did his usual superb job as Chief Steward.
The test for the thirty two dogs opened with the standard 2 rounds: two straight marks in the first round and a crossing retrieve in the second. Fourteen dogs went through to the third round after lunch. Two marks and a blind behind were out and it was pot luck as to whether a dog had blinds or marks for the two retrieves in this round. Each time the blind was picked first and then the marks.
The judges finally made another cut, this time to five dogs. Each in turn had to go fifty yards across the beet rows to the grass track on the edge of the field where a blind (indicated by a shot along the track) had been placed.
