The winner, Berryshot Bernie, owned by Steven Berry and handled by Jason Mayhew, and the judges, Mrs Glynis Hillier, Mr Rodger Ketley, Mr James Bailey and Mr James Murphy.

The Open Qualifying Stake for AV Retrievers was held on Thursday 13 th and Friday 14 th October 2022 at Ampton Estate, Great Livermere, by kind permission of Mr Peter Rushbrook.

This was the URC’s second visit to Ampton in just a few weeks, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Alan Hammond and his team for all their hard work in ensuring that we enjoyed two very successful trials.

Our judges were Mrs Glynis Hillier, Mr Rodger Ketley, Mr James Bailey and Mr James Murphy. Many thanks to them for generously giving their time and expertise. Also, for their support of our event and fine shooting throughout, grateful thanks go to Mr Terry Humber and his team of Guns.

The first day started grey and damp, but the cloud soon evaporated and gave way to very warm, sunny and calm conditions with just occasional light winds. Dogs and handlers were put through their paces, facing a wide variety of retrieves: pheasant, partridge and hare were picked in woodland, roots, tall maize and thick, deep reed beds. Despite the considerable challenges they faced, seventeen dogs progressed through to the second day. Conditions then were somewhat cooler with more cloud and a stronger breeze. Several long retrieves down the line and to be picked out of tall maize meant that just six dogs made it through to the final round. The results were as follows:

The Stourhead Challenge Trophy, The Rank Challenge Trophy and The Ballyfrema Trophy were awarded to the winner: Berryshot Bernie, owned by Steven Berry and handled by Jason Mayhew.

The Lambdale Trophy was awarded to the runner-up: Fieldbrooke Quinn at Quingrave, owned and handled by Stephen Newitt.

3rd Nobsquinton Nettle, owned and handled by Claire Raymond

4th Skovagers Six Mile Woodcock, owned and handled by Louise Munchaus Adsboel

Certificates of Merit were awarded to:

Overthwarts Bilton, owned and handled by Keith Foster

Drakeshead Drew of Llangynidr, owned and handled by Nigel Probert

The Jerico Trophy for Guns’ Choice was awarded to: Diglake Napravnik, owned, bred and handled by Dawn Scott

Many congratulations from everyone at URC to all those in the awards, and very best wishes for a successful Championship to Jason and Bertie.
