The United Retriever Club held its first Novice trial of the season on Wednesday 4th January 2023 at Goosehill Shoot, Droitwich by kind permission of Ms Clare Davies.

Prior to the commencement of the trial, a one-minute silence was observed in memory of Sarah Jaggard, our highly respected and much valued URC Midland Area Secretary, Working Test Secretary and Area Field Trial Representative. Sarah passed away on Christmas Eve; she will be sadly missed by everyone at URC, following her very many years of dedicated service to the club.

Our judges for the day were Mr Philip Bruton, Mr Sean McGrath, Mr Leigh Jackson and Mr Morton Redpath. Many thanks to them for giving their time and expertise; and also grateful thanks to Mr Chris Aston and his team of Guns for supporting the trial. Special thanks to Steward of the Beat Mr Neil Edkins and his team, who were so welcoming and accommodating of the Club; and Miss Clare Baker (URC BC&C Area Field Trial Representative), who was our Chief Steward, and worked so hard to organise the trial beforehand, ensuring a very successful and enjoyable day. And of course, particular thanks to Clare’s helpers: members of the URC BC&C Area Committee, who gave up their time to support the day by stewarding, game carrying and marking down.

Weather conditions were good; a dry, overcast day of mild temperatures and occasional strong breeze. The trial started with a drive over pasture land: pheasant and duck were picked from grass fields with hedges, bushes and ditches. It then moved into mature woodland; the walk up through dense cover of trees, high bramble and thick reed beds made very challenging work for both dogs and handlers. Those that prevailed through the testing conditions were as follows:

The Taurgo Quaiche to the winner, Jenberry Mystery Heritage, owned and handled by Vicki Ruston.

Certificate of Merit to Tideshot Reed of Hadfelda, owned and handled by Rob Cresswell.

The Sulby Cup for Guns’ Choice was awarded to Nobsquinton Sea Aster, owned and handled by Bella Brown.
