The walked-up novice and open working test held on Field trial lines took place on Sunday 18th August 2019 at Glewstone nr Ross on Wye. Once again, we were delighted to accept Mr & Mrs A Jackson’s invitation to hold this event on their fabulous ground. BC&C have been invited to Glewstone for many years and it is a pleasure to hold the walked up working test here.
This year saw a full card in both the novice and open and the judges Mr Craig Perry and Mr F Wright were kept busy all day giving competitors ample time to show their dogs working.
The novice test held in the morning took place in mixture of wild flowers and grass and certainly proved challenging with a strong wind also adding to the difficulty. Mr Jackson has put several fields to this mixture as part of the environmental stewardship scheme.
As in previous years Iris Wright was in charge of the ‘guns’ and she orchestrated the retrieves via radio messaging to the guns. This kept everyone on their toes!
The novice dogs showed a high standard of work and the judges had a difficult time separating the award winners.
After four rounds the judges closed their books and were able to make the following awards:

The Open test held in the afternoon was in a similar field of wild flowers and grass with two large strips of winter bird seed at different stages in their development. These two areas were quite dense and saw the loss of four dogs after a judges’ eye wipe.
Iris Wright again was in charge of the retrieves and subjected the open dogs to cross retrieving and ‘down the line’ retrieves as well as blinds in front and behind the lines.
As with the Novices’ the open dogs also showed a high standard of work and the judges decided on a long marked retrieve in the final round for those dogs left in.
The judges were then able to make their decision.
