Novice award winners
Myrtle Farm in the heart of the Mendip Hills was the venue for the Walked Up tests,
our hosts Mr & Mrs Lunnon welcomed us to this beautiful part of Somerset.
The weather was perfect, sunny, but not too hot, breezy and the ground undulating grassland.
The competition held under The Kennel Club Ltd Rules and Field Trial Regulations, was run on Field Trial lines, which immediately seemed to put some of the novice handlers new to the “Walked-Up” experience under pressure.
The judges for the day were Basil Smith and Kevin Harrison, who put these novice competitors at ease with good humour and patience.
Steward of the beat Helen Cripps, herself an experienced field trialer, ran the line, controlling the shots and dummy throwers to make the retrieves innovative and challenging. Dog steward Sue Roberts, with the help of stewards, Alison Wilson and Mandy Askham ensured the movement of the dogs and their handlers flowed accurately and kept the line moving smoothly throughout.
Overall the standard of the dogs and their handlers was very high in both the Novice and the Open. The judges commented at the conclusion of the Novice and the Open that they had had great difficulty in separating some of the dogs with six dogs going through to the final rounds in each.
Mrs Lunnon made the presentations at the end of the Novice and Open, she and her husband had spent the whole day with us and are very supportive to URC providing training grounds throughout the year.

Special thanks to Sheila Brocklehurst for the wonderful catering helped by Michelle Reed and Ian Wilson our working test secretary who does so much throughout the “test season” with help from Alison!
