The Championship Show was held at the Kennel Club Building for the first time on Wednesday 13 August, having been held at Malvern for the past twenty years. In a way, we were returning to our spiritual home, as before Malvern, we had been at Stoneleigh for many years. It was also experimenatal, as it was our first Championship Show without benching. We were delighted that the entry was up on previous years and hope that the trend continues in future. The day went smoothly, helped by the weather, which remained dry, except for a slight shower at lunchtime.
Best in Show was judged by Becky Johnson, who had been our Show Secretary for 13 years, prior to Gill May, she gave BIS and Best Puppy in Show not only to the same breed, but to the same breeder. We were delighted that our President Bernard Hall and his wife Rosemary were able to join us, although they had to leave before BIS, which meant that presenting the trophies fell to the club chairman.
It had been in doubt whether we would be able to run a scurry, but we found a space and with the help of Emily Powell, who was a whizz on the stop watch, 38 dogs enjoyed themselves retrieving two dummies with varying success. It got very competitive among the front runners, with the eventual winner being Sue Pounds-Longhurst's Golden Retriever bitch.
Inevitably with any new venue, there were issues to be addressed, it is not set in stone that we remain at Stoneleigh long term, we have not ruled out a return to Malvern and are also open to suggestions on other possible venues.
