URC North Midlands Open Cold Game Test 2021

The Open Cold Game Test at Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire was held on 12th September 2021 by kind permission of Mr Robert Bealby with sponsorship from Alpha Feeds. The judges were David Haycock and Paul Birkbeck, with Malcolm Peacock as Chief Steward. The card of 27 included three breeds of retriever. The weather was cool and cloudy, ideal for good dog work. A 40 acre field of sugar bet on undulating ground provided the setting for a walked up competition. Forward guns on each flank saluted thrown pigeons. Each judge had two dogs in line, tested with forward marks on their own flank in the first round, and for a diagonal cross retrieve in the second round. Dogs marked accurately for straight retrieves, with more variation when crossing. Failures were few, but on two occasion Harvey Richardson succeeded with eyewipes after others had failed to pick. All dogs without failures ran after lunch. For this third round each dog in turn had a blind behind and a memory retrieve of a long cross retrieve in front. Much variation in performance was evident, helping the judges to arrive at awards for three Labradors and three golden retrievers. The awards were presented by Mrs Bealby of Broomhill Grange. The Styxland Trophy and sack of Alpha food going to popular winner Harvey Richardson..
