The United Retriever Club (North Midland Area) held an Open Cold Game Test at Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire on 8th September 2013 by kind permission of Mr Robert Bealby. The judges were Mr David Haycock and Mr Kevin Jackson. The event was generously sponsored by Alpha.
The weather was cool and dry, with a variable breeze. The ground comprised a stubble field bordered by two fields of sugar beet. There were three retriever breeds among the 30 competitors. The test commenced with a walk-up in the beet field to the West. Flanking guns saluted marked pigeons in front, with a central gun fired behind for occasional blinds. The first round progressed well. In the second round the guns were pushed forward and the dogs sent for long cross retrieves. Those from one side proved difficult leading to a series of failures. After lunch the judges called in a dozen dogs for a third round of two more retrieves in the beet to the East. Some marks behind were interspersed with marks down the line. Some fast stylish work was seen. The seven top dogs were called in for a mock drive sited on a grassy knoll in the stubble. Then each dog was sent for a long blind downhill, through a hedge, and out to one of three locations in the sugar beet. The prizes were then presented by Club Vice President Elaine Welburn.
