Report for Puppy/Special Puppy/ Junior Handler and Novice dog Novice handler test
The United Retriever Club Border Counties and Cotswold Area held their Puppy, Special Puppy, Junior Handler and Novice Dog / Novice Handler test on 15th July at The Elms Farm, Rockhampton by permission of Mr and Mrs M E Goode and sponsored by Skinners dog food.
The judges were Iris Wright and Sandra Onens
The weather was very hot so we decided to run all classes straight through in the morning before it became too hot.
The puppies and junior handlers ran together and the special puppies and the novice dog/novice handlers ran together. Each group did five tests, but they were not all the same, this gave a few logistical problems
Test 1 was Double Seen
The puppies and junior handlers had seens at right angles where the second thrown (closed side) was collected first
The Special puppies and the novice dog/novice handlers had longer distances, narrower angle and first thrown (open side) was collected first
Test 2 was a water test
The puppies and junior handlers had a seen in the water
The special puppies and novice dog/novice handlers had a seen on the edge of an island, with two dogs sat up together
Test 3 had two different tests
The puppies and junior handlers had a heel work exercise, with a stay, a recall and a retrieve
The special puppies and novice dog/novice handlers were sent from the wood over a small jump into the field for a seen and a blind in the same place.
Test 4 was a blind along a track and in a gateway. The puppies did this second and started further along the track
Test 5 had two different tests
The puppies and junior handlers had a mini drive, with two birds to be picked out of four from a rough area
The special puppies and novice dog/novice handlers had a two dog walk up in game crop with a seen in front and a seen behind.
The day seemed to flow quite well. Sterling work was done by our dummy throwers Mike White, Matt Justice and Andy Doyle. Also, our stewards Jean White, Margaret Guest and Sally Vercoe. There was delicious food provided by Jill Justice.
Prizes and gifts presented, we were on our way home by 2.30.
