It was the perfect dog competition weather for our intermediate and veteran test, sponsored by Skinners Dog Foods, warm and sunny with a cool breeze.  We were invited to the Elms at Rockhampton by Mike and Sandie Goode and their ground provided us with great opportunities for tests in woodland, on water and open ground. We had an excellent number of competitors and from 28 entries, 25 dogs ran on the day.

We completed three tests before lunch. Sandie Goode judged a blind down a track that challenged the dogs to take a straight line, taking them off the track on a corner into cover for a blind; Helen Goodwin judged a double mark with one of the marks falling into dark woodland. This mark was a slightly shorter distance for the veterans. Paul Smith judged the water test with the dogs retrieving a mark first before having to cross the water onto the far bank to retrieve a blind.

Following a short break for lunch, we completed tests 4 and 5.

Test 4 was a long mark across open ground, through a gateway onto a bank, judged by Paul Smith. The veterans did the same test but at a shorter distance. Sandie Goode and Helen Goodwin judged Test 5, a 4-dog walk-up, with each dog being sent across the line to retrieve a blind and mark from the off the end of the line. We were unfortunately caught in a cloudburst of heavy rain with lots of us without coats getting wet but once it had passed the sun was back out to dry us off.

A run off between 3 dogs for 4th place was necessary.   A long mark over a jump decided the awards of 4th and two Certificates of Merit.

We very much appreciated the effort of the stewards; Liz Widdows, Astrid Lever and Alison Wilson, who were instrumental in getting competitors to the tests smartly so everything ran smoothly without delays. Dummy throwers David Godding, Eddie Langford, Mike Pudsey, John Cornforth and Ian Wilson, were also essential in achieving consistent tests and overall the successful event.

The icing on the cake for our lovely day was the sun coming out for the presentations and photographs.
