After lunch we continued with the open, and as there were only twenty one dogs entered, three judges, Phil Bruton, Paul Truby and Iris Wright, were enough to give everyone five tests. We started with 3 tests running concurrently, first two long marks one falling beyond the other; second a blind across water into reeds and third a blind on top of a bank with a mark falling behind some bushes, the blind to be picked first. These tests proved to be challenging, but again the better dogs completed them in style.
A further two tests rounded off the afternoon, a four dog walk-up requiring marked retrieves over a wall and also from cover crop judged by Phil and Paul, while Iris judged a long blind across plough into the edge of a wood.
To complete the day we needed an army of helpers. I cannot thank them enough for agreeing to give up their time, many at the last minute when we discovered the size of the entry. A special mention must go to our caterer Astrid Lever, whose excellent chilli at lunchtime helped us through the afternoon.
